The practical side of living in Merrick: the parks, the commute, where I like to eat, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
Parks and the bay
Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve at 1600 Merrick Road covers 52 acres, with a 500-foot fishing pier into Merrick Bay, a kayak launch and about three miles of trails. Merrick Road Park on Clubhouse Road has ball fields and tennis courts, and the Town's nine-hole golf course sits just east of the Meadowbrook.
Getting around
The Merrick station is on the LIRR's Babylon Branch, on Sunrise Highway between Hewlett and Merrick Avenues; check MTA schedules for trains to the city. By car, the Meadowbrook State Parkway has exits for Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road.
A few of my favorites
For dinner on Merrick Road: La Piazza, LouTony's Italian Kitchen, and Tony & Luigi's right next door. Sushi Ko is on Merrick Avenue. The Merrick Library is at 2279 Merrick Avenue.
Schools
Merrick is served by the Merrick and North Merrick elementary districts and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District for grades 7 to 12. District lines don't follow hamlet or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes collects school, county and town property taxes. General taxes are due in halves on January 1 and July 1 (payable without penalty through February 10 and August 10); school taxes are due October 1 and April 1 (through November 10 and May 10). See the tax payment schedule. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with Nassau County's Assessment Review Commission; the next filing window runs January 4 to March 1, 2027.
Permits and flood zones
Building permits come from the Town of Hempstead Building Department, which also has floodplain managers on staff. Flood zones can change from one block to the next near the water, so look up any address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center before you make an offer.
