The practical side of living in Freeport: the waterfront, the commute, and the village taxes and permits that make Freeport different from the hamlets around it.
The Nautical Mile and the water
The Nautical Mile runs along Woodcleft Avenue, beside the Woodcleft Canal. At its foot, Sea Breeze Park has a boat dock, a volleyball court and a field. The village's Guy Lombardo Marina has 252 slips, open April through November, and Cow Meadow Park on South Main Street is a park and preserve.
Recreation and the library
The Freeport Recreation Center at 130 East Merrick Road has an ice rink, a health wing and a senior center. The Freeport Memorial Library is at 144 West Merrick Road.
Getting around
The Freeport station on the LIRR's Babylon Branch sits just north of Sunrise Highway; check MTA schedules for trains to the city. Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road cross the village east to west, and the Meadowbrook State Parkway runs along its eastern edge.
Utilities
Freeport is one of the few Long Island villages with its own electric company: Freeport Electric, run by the village since 1898, serves homes here instead of PSEG Long Island.
Schools
Most of Freeport is served by the Freeport Union Free School District, with small portions in the Roosevelt Union Free School District. District lines don't always follow village lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes and assessments
Freeport homeowners get a village tax bill from the Village Treasurer, paid in two halves in spring and fall, in addition to the Town of Hempstead bills for school, county and town taxes. The village also keeps its own assessment roll, so a grievance for village taxes is filed with the village in November, separately from the county's Assessment Review Commission.
Permits and flood zones
All construction, plumbing and electrical work in the village needs a permit from the Village of Freeport Building Department, which has a certified floodplain manager on staff and keeps elevation certificates on file. Look up any address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center before you make an offer.
