The practical side of living in Baldwin: the parks, the commute, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
Parks
Baldwin Park at 3232 Grand Avenue has ball fields, courts and pickleball, a playground, a dog run, a spray pool, a skate park and a walking trail. Nassau County's Silver Lake Park on Foxhurst Road is a nine-acre park with a walkway around its pond, and Lofts Pond Park is on Merrick Road.
Getting around
The Baldwin station on the LIRR's Babylon Branch is at Sunrise Highway and Grand Avenue; check MTA schedules for trains to the city.
The library
The Baldwin Public Library is at 2385 Grand Avenue.
Schools
Most of Baldwin is served by the Baldwin Union Free School District, with smaller parts in the Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt and Uniondale districts. District lines don't follow hamlet or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes collects school, county and town property taxes. General taxes are due in halves on January 1 and July 1 (payable without penalty through February 10 and August 10); school taxes are due October 1 and April 1 (through November 10 and May 10). See the tax payment schedule. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with Nassau County's Assessment Review Commission; the next filing window runs January 4 to March 1, 2027.
Permits and flood zones
Building permits come from the Town of Hempstead Building Department. Near the water in Baldwin Harbor, look up any address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center before you make an offer.
